RE: Putting my 5th wheel on jack stands for the winter

I too think it is a waste of time but it seems the easiest way would be to snug up the jack stands, one in front and one behind the tires, then deflate the tires to about 40 lbs and transfering some of the load from the springs. I would still use the other supports built into your rig.

RE: Is a 40 ft. fifth wheel to long for most campgrounds?

We have had a problem once in about 15 yrs. It was a SP in KY and we did find a spot even though it wasn't our first choice. The distance from the hitch to the front axle is the same as on the 35' rigs I've checked so it will turn as good as them. If your hitch weight is OK you'll be fine. About the only time I think I might like a smaller rig is when gassing up.

RE: Uniroyal Laredo AWP sidewalls cracking...

I doubt the cracks are hurting anything. My guess is they are on the side that gets the most sun.

RE: Auxiliary gas tank

I have a transfer tank inside my tool box and it works fine. I have an electric fuel pump and I don't think gravity will do the job. I cut the bottom out of the tool box so if there is a spill it will run out and can be flushed if needed.

RE: Plies vs load rating & wheel psi?

What lv2rom said plus the fact that the overall diameter of 16" tires does not have to be larger. If you have a 30" dia now you can find a 30" on a 16" rim for example.

RE: 08 F 450 ?s

I'm not trying to start something but I always wonder why someone goes back to a brand that has treated them so poorly? I guess there is not much choice.

RE: Wind deflectors, do they add mpg????

As mentioned this comes up all the time. I think the main response is that it raises the bug line and this says to me that less of the front is effected by wind drag. I don't know if you can measure the MPG change but it has to help.

RE: Best tire guage to check dually

The main thing for me was to have one that allows you to stay on the valve stem for inflation and checking so once you have it your good to go.

RE: Where's the AIR ???

You should not have lost that much pressure. I would check with another guage. You can run the tire at less than 80PSI and you can figure out what is required for the weight you are carrying by looking at the load charts provide on the manufacture web site.

RE: Old Tires????

I replaced my tires after 10 yrs and I didn't have a flat or any other problems during that time. The sun will cause problems but if it is not hitting the shelf they are on they will be fine. There are a lot of things being done that wont hurt you except in the pocket book and I believe this is one. Changing oil every 3K, packing wheel bearings yearly,ETC, the handwringers can make you crazy if you let them.

RE: Bypassing Trans Cooler through Radiator

I don't recommend it as Ford tried this for a few years and went back to useing the radiator again. You get some stability to the temp which gives you a more stable viscosity. Is your new cooler befor or after your radiator? Should be after and should be positioned for max airflow over the coil. My GMC was right behind the grill emblem and by removing it while towing I run 10 - 15 degrees cooler. I also took a hacksaw blade and removed excess plastic in the area as well. The emblem is plastic and has tabs which allow it to be removed easy. I only had a problem with heating to high when in the rockies on two lane roads where you couldn't maintain speed and this was all I needed to do to correct it.

I'm wondering if it is not the oil pressure switch.

RE: mpg difference between F450 4.88 vs 4.30 rear end?

If you increased the tire size 13% you would have the same or close to it final gear ratio and I think it would also look good.

RE: water pump trouble

Connect a hose to it and see if the pressure from the line stops it from running. If it does you are loosing pressure from a leak and should see water dripping somewhere. Mine was letting the pressure bleed back out of the hose connection itself.

RE: fuel origin

I don't know how they seperate or combine it but most is shipped to nearest refinery for that source. Most of the Alaskan oil goes to Japan and is replaced by them with mideast oil as I understand it. If you are thinking of avoiding a source it would be hard to do and also not getting to the source of the current problem. The speculators on the commodity exchanges are driving up the price and opec has stated anywhere between $80 and $100 suits them. We are now near $140 I believe. If we have the full blown recession that we seem to be headed for that will soften the price as we will go from haveing enough to an over supply. Either way it is probably going to get worse befor it get better IMO.

RE: Cool!, hurry up before diesel prices kill it

These old references to 1/2 ton, 3/4 ton and 1 ton have long been surpassed by these vehicles carrying capacities but it is an easy way to clarify which we are talking about. If the gearing and suspension are matched to the engine it will do fine.
Subtract about 400 additional pounds of diesel option engine weight from the payload of that "half ton" and in spite of the term being 'old reference" it suddenly becomes meaningful again.
What numbers are you subtracting from? I didn't see them in the article. It will be less than the 2500 I'm sure but haven't seen any numbers yet.

RE: 8.1 Chevy

I get between 6.5 and 8.0 towing and as mentioned the wind is the killer. I don't see the drop off some do with speed, maybe 1/2 mpg when outwest towing at the posted limit.

RE: 90 degree turn not possible while driving forward??

1. True
2. False My pin is about a foot back from the front of the 5vr and so I have about 4' 6" from the pin to the corner. I think the turning radius of a short bed would allow you to contact the cab.

RE: Outer Wheel Bearings

Tiffany50
With problems like you are experiencing, I'd check and determine what weight of axles you have under the 5th Wheel. They may be too light and the bearings are too small for the trailer weight.
BTC
This was my thinking also. The axles should have come from the manufacture to the 5vr builder ready to install but you could have gotten a bad bearing right from the start. This is the first I have heard of a problem of the magnitude.
